Hurricanes do have advantages after all. It's about time I stop bitching and look at the positive side of things.
Since Tuesday of last week, after Wilma disappeared into the Atlantic ocean, the weather here is
just like in the tourist brochures. The ocean calm as your aquarium (only this one has sharks in it), a
light breeze, mild temperatures and a clear sky. However, the really bit difference can be noticed at night!
Most of us who grew up in large cities don't really know what the night sky looks like. The 'light pollution' from
the city lights hides all but the brightest stars even on a moonless night.
Well, here we have for the last week or so a natural Planetary Observatory over most of southern Florida.
Thanks to the massive power outages the nights are so dark, you can see more stars in the sky than we
have sand on our beaches. Ok, I may be getting a bit too excited here but you get the idea.
It is interesting to see how "dark" a city without power is. No surprise we have nightly curfews!

We are just being informed that it looks like as if there is now a shortage of flu medicine. The main reason
seems to be that some 20,000 units have been shipped out of Florida before the hurricane arrived to keep
them 'safe'.
Excellent idea. Patient dead, Medicine safe.
Maybe we should have packed up our power lines and poles as well.
As you can see, I am somewhat cranky before I have my morning cup o' Java :-)

Miami schools have reopened today. While many of the buildings are still rather messy, they are deemed to be safe.
As for the Traffic signals, especially in school zones, nobody knows if they work. The cops have announced that
they will crack down on anyone caught speeding in a school zone, Light or no Lights...
I can see the title of the first home assignment
An essay describing how to combat boredom when TV, Nintendo and the DVD player are out of power. :-)

Still 600.000 folks without power. Yes, I am one of them. And it's 91F and no A/C. Darn.

11 days without power now. The good thing is the noisy little Converter in the pump house. It converts a bucket
of gasoline into 8h of electricity for the fridge, coffee maker, computer and the cell phone charger.
Just read in the manual that the unit, thanks to it's lightweight construction, can be easily used
in any convenient location. The little bugger weights in at 100lb 'dry'. Who writes these manuals?
Rambo or Schwarzenegger?

Either Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) has reopened or the Pilot
of this Boeing 737 has a bit of Explaining to do when the FAA calls :-)
